New city catechism question of the week:
Question #43:
What are the sacraments or ordinances?
Answer:
Baptism and the Lord’s Supper.
Memory Verse: 1 Corinthians 15:3–4
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.
Talk about it together
After Jesus rose from the dead, he appeared to many people. He appeared to the women at the tomb, his disciples, and other followers. Why do you think Jesus appeared to so many people? He wanted them to know that he was truly alive and that God had raised him from the dead!
Jesus’ disciples were afraid and confused. They gathered in a house and locked the doors because they were afraid of what might happen to them. They had believed Jesus was the promised Savior, but when he was arrested and killed, they became afraid and ran away.
Some of Jesus’ followers heard that he was alive. The disciples were talking about what had happened when suddenly Jesus appeared among them! He said, “Peace be with you.”
Jesus wanted his followers to know they did not have to live in fear. Because Jesus is alive, those who trust in him can have peace, even when life feels scary or uncertain.
Jesus explained that everything written in the Scriptures pointed to him. He died on the cross to take the punishment for our sins and defeated death by rising from the grave! Jesus told his disciples to go and tell others the good news. Jesus died and rose again so people could turn away from their sins, receive God’s forgiveness, and have a relationship with him. Jesus also promised to give them the Holy Spirit to help them share this wonderful news with others.
Today, everyone who follows Jesus has the privilege of sharing the good news that he is alive! We can tell others about Jesus and what he has done for us. We cannot change someone’s heart because only God can do that, but we can share the truth about Jesus so others have the opportunity to hear and believe.
Remember, Jesus is alive! Because he died for our sins and rose again, we can be forgiven, have peace with God, and share his good news with the world.
