NOV 8
New city catechism question of the week:
Question #45:
Is baptism with water the washing away of sin itself?
Answer:
No, only the blood of Christ can cleanse us from sin.
Memory Verse: 1 Corinthians 15:3–4
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.
Talk about it together
Some of Jesus’ disciples were fishermen before they began following him. Jesus told them he would make them “fishers of men,” which meant they would tell others about Jesus and help them follow him. When Jesus was arrested and put on the cross, the disciples were afraid. They ran away, and Peter even said three times that he did not know Jesus. But Jesus rose from the dead and appeared to his disciples several times.
One day, some of the disciples went fishing on the Sea of Galilee. They fished all night but did not catch anything. In the morning, Jesus stood on the shore and called out to them. At first, they did not recognize him. Jesus told them to throw their net on the right side of the boat. When they did, they caught so many fish that they could hardly pull the net into the boat!
Then one of the disciples realized who he was and said, “It is the Lord!” Peter was so excited that he jumped into the water and swam to shore to see Jesus.
Jesus invited the disciples to eat breakfast with him. He gave them bread and fish, and then he talked with Peter. Three times, Jesus asked Peter, “Do you love me?” Each time, Peter answered that he loved Jesus. Jesus told Peter to care for his people, saying, “Feed my sheep” and “Follow me.”
Jesus loved Peter and restored him, even though Peter had denied knowing him. Jesus still had an important job for Peter to do! He wanted Peter to care for others and help them follow Jesus.
Jesus forgives us and gives us a fresh start. We do not earn his forgiveness by being good enough. Jesus forgives us because he loves us and gave his life on the cross to rescue us from sin. When we sin, we can turn to Jesus, trust in his forgiveness, and follow him. Jesus is the Lord who forgives us, makes us new, and helps us live for him.
