Jesus Was Tempted

LESSON DATE & SCRIPTURE: APR 26 | Matthew 4:1-11

New city catechism question of the week:
Question #17:
What is idolatry?

Answer:
Idolatry is trusting in created things rather than the Creator for our hope, happiness, significance, or security.

Memory Verse: Romans 10:9

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Talk about it together

Jesus was tempted and tested in many ways, yet he always trusted and obeyed God. He never sinned. Satan tried to lead Jesus away from God’s plan by tempting him physically, spiritually, and in his purpose on earth. But Jesus stood firm. He responded by remembering and trusting God’s Word.

Like Jesus, we face temptation too. We are tempted to make wrong choices or to trust something other than God. The good news is that Jesus loves us. He took the punishment for our sin and made a way for us to have new life with him.

With God’s help, we can choose what is right. And when we fail, we can confess our sin and receive forgiveness because of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Family discussion

  • Who tempted Jesus?

  • How was Jesus tempted?

  • What did Jesus tell Satan to do?

  • What example did Jesus give us for resisting temptation?

Family prayer

Lord, thank you for giving us your Spirit to help us when we are tempted. Please forgive us when we sin and help us trust your Word. Amen.
