+ Nothing

Key Takeaways

  • The gospel is Jesus + Nothing = Everything.

  • Adding anything to Jesus for salvation is offensive to both religious and secular people.

  • God cleanses hearts by faith alone, not by works or rituals.

  • A Jesus + Nothing community is reconciled and puts the gospel on display.

  • Faith in Jesus gives us not just forgiveness, but also righteousness.

Study Questions

  • Reflect on ways you might add to the gospel in your own life. How can we guard against this tendency?

  • John discusses proofs for "Jesus + Nothing" from Peter, Paul, and James. Which of these proofs resonates most with you and why?

  • How does understanding the difference between forgiveness and righteousness (as illustrated in the bank analogy) impact your view of salvation?

  • John mentions that a "Jesus + Nothing" community makes room for others. How can our church or other groups you may be a part of embody this principle?

  • There is often tension between being "free in Christ" and "gladly bound to one another for the sake of the mission of God." How do we navigate this tension in practical terms?

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!

All: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy.

Psalm 103:1-4

Confession of FAITH

We believe that while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since therefore we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Romans 5:6-11

Confession of Sin

Father, we confess we make your gospel harder for others by adding hurdles to your grace. Lord Jesus, we try to hide from the offense of your cross by clinging to our own respectability. Holy Spirit, we trouble the fellowship you create when we withhold welcome from those you have cleansed. Forgive us, Triune God, and cleanse us by faith alone, that our life together may display your reconciling love to the world.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
