Jesus Met a Samaritan Woman

LESSON DATE & SCRIPTURE: May 17 | John 4:1-42

New city catechism question of the week:
Question #20:
Who is the Redeemer?

Answer:
The only Redeemer is the Lord Jesus Christ.

Memory Verse: John 14:6

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Talk about it together

Jesus taught many people throughout Judea. As he traveled back to Galilee, he went through a place called Samaria. Many Jews avoided Samaria because they did not get along with the people who lived there. But Jesus loves all people and had a purpose in going there.

While resting by a well, Jesus met a Samaritan woman. She was surprised when he asked her for a drink because Jewish men did not usually speak to women in public, especially Samaritan women. But Jesus was kind and compassionate toward her.

Jesus told the woman about “living water.” At first, she thought he meant ordinary water, but Jesus was speaking about the new life, joy, and peace that come from knowing him. He explained that he is the promised Messiah who came to help people know and love God. Jesus knew everything about her life, and he still loved her deeply.

The woman believed in Jesus. She was so excited that she ran to tell everyone in her town about him. Because she shared the good news, many others believed in Jesus too.

Jesus loves everyone and gives the Holy Spirit to those who trust in him. Like the Samaritan woman, we can tell others about Jesus and share his love with our family, friends, and neighbors so they can know him too.

Lord, thank you that you are the Savior who offers new life, joy, and peace to all who believe in you. Amen.
