Talk about it together
Jesus went with his disciples to pray in the Garden of Gethsemane. He knew the difficult things that were about to happen. Jesus knew it was God's plan for him to be the savior of the world, and that meant he would die on the cross. He could have chosen not to obey, but he didn't. Jesus prayed to his Father and asked if there was any other way. Yet he trusted God's plan and chose to obey, even though he knew it would be very hard.
When Jesus returned from praying, he found the disciples asleep. He told them to wake up because someone was about to betray him. Soon Judas, one of Jesus' disciples, arrived with a large group of men. Judas had seen Jesus' miracles, witnessed his healings, and heard his teaching, yet he chose to help the men who wanted to arrest Jesus. He kissed Jesus on the cheek as a signal, and the men took Jesus away.
Peter tried to protect Jesus with his sword, but Jesus told him to stop because this was God's plan.
Jesus was arrested even though he had done nothing wrong. The religious leaders tried to find a reason to accuse him, but they could not. Jesus did what we could never do. He obeyed God perfectly. He is the only one who could be the perfect sacrifice to take away the sin of the world.
When the high priest asked Jesus if he was the Messiah, the Son of God, Jesus answered truthfully. Even though he spoke the truth, the religious leaders accused him of lying.
Jesus was betrayed by a friend, arrested, falsely accused, and beaten. None of this surprised him. He knew it was all part of God's perfect plan. Jesus came to earth to obey his Father and rescue people from their sin. He is exactly who he says he is—the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He followed God's plan because of his great love for us.

Dear God, thank you for sending your son, Jesus, and for your perfect plan to save us. Thank you for loving us so much that Jesus willingly obeyed and gave his life so we could be rescued from our sin. Amen.
