Talk about it together
Jesus and his disciples gathered to celebrate the Passover meal together. As they sat around the table, Jesus knew that his time on earth was coming to an end and that he would soon return to his Father in heaven. Before he left, he wanted to teach his disciples an important lesson.
Jesus got up from the table, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin. Then he began washing his disciples' feet. Washing someone's feet was usually the job of a servant. Peter was surprised and did not want Jesus to wash his feet. He did not understand why Jesus, their teacher and Lord, would do something a servant would normally do.
When Jesus finished, he asked his disciples, "Do you understand what I have done for you?" Jesus explained that he had given them an example. Even though he is Lord and teacher, he chose to serve others. He wanted his disciples to love and serve one another in the same way.
While they were eating, Jesus took the bread, thanked God, broke it, and gave it to his disciples. He said, "Take and eat; this is my body." Then he took the cup, thanked God, and gave it to them. He said, "Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."
This was Jesus' last meal with his disciples before he died on the cross and rose again. Jesus explained that his death would bring a new covenant: God's promise to forgive sins through him. God's people had broken the old covenant, but Jesus came to establish a new one. Everyone who trusts in him can be forgiven and have a relationship with God.
Jesus showed his disciples that following him means trusting him, loving others, and serving others with humility.
