JULY 19 | John 2:1–12
New city catechism question of the week:
Question #29:
How can we be saved?
Answer:
Only by faith in Jesus Christ and in his Substitutionary atoning death on the cross.
Memory Verse: John 20:31
But these are written so that you might believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Talk about it together
Jesus spent his time on earth teaching people about God, showing love to others, and performing amazing miracles. Every miracle pointed people to the truth about who he is. Jesus is God's Son, the promised Messiah, who came to save us from our sins by dying on the cross and rising again.
One day, Jesus, his disciples, and his mother, Mary, attended a wedding in the town of Cana. Weddings were joyful celebrations, but during the feast the family ran out of wine. Mary told Jesus about the problem and then said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
Jesus instructed the servants to fill six large stone jars with water. Then he performed his first public miracle by turning the water into wine. This miracle showed everyone that Jesus has God's power and that he is the promised Savior.
This miracle was about much more than helping at a wedding. It showed that Jesus came to give people something far greater than wine. He gives us himself. Jesus is the true source of life, joy, and hope. His disciples saw his glory and believed in him. Just as Jesus cared for the people at the wedding, he cares for us. He has power over everything and came to solve our greatest problem, sin. Everyone who trusts in Jesus can be forgiven and have eternal life with him.
