New city catechism question of the week:
Question #34:
Since we are redeemed by grace alone, through Christ alone, must we still do good works and obey God's Word?

Answer:
Yes, so that our lives may show love and gratitude to God; and so that by our godly behavior others may be won to Christ.

Memory Verse: Psalm 103:2–3

Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases.

Talk about it together

News about Jesus' teaching and miracles was spreading everywhere. Crowds of people wanted to hear him and experience his healing power. A man named Jairus, who was a leader in the synagogue, came to Jesus and begged him to help his daughter because she was very sick. Jesus went with Jairus, and a large crowd followed them.

On the way, a woman in the crowd needed Jesus' help too. She had been sick for many years, and no doctor had been able to heal her. She believed Jesus could heal her, so she reached out and touched his robe. Immediately, she was healed. Jesus stopped and asked, "Who touched me?" The woman came forward and told him what had happened. Jesus said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace."

While Jesus was speaking with the woman, some men came to tell Jairus that his daughter had died. Jairus was heartbroken and thought it was too late. But Jesus said to him, "Do not be afraid. Just believe."

Jesus went to Jairus' house, where many people were crying because they thought there was no hope. Jesus took the little girl by the hand and said, "Little girl, get up." Immediately, she opened her eyes, stood up, and began to walk. Jairus and his wife were amazed and filled with joy. Jesus had brought their daughter back to life.

The woman and Jairus both trusted Jesus and believed he could help them. Jesus showed his power as the promised Messiah by healing the woman and raising the little girl from the dead. He showed his greatest power when he died on the cross and rose again to save us from sin and death. When we trust in Jesus, God forgives our sins and promises that we will be with him forever.

Family discussion

  • What did the woman touch to show her faith in Jesus?

  • What did Jairus think when he heard his daughter had died?

  • What did Jairus and the woman believe about Jesus?

  • What does Jesus save us from?

Family prayer

Dear God, thank you for showing us your great power and love through your Son, Jesus. We trust that you can heal those who are sick and continue to change our hearts to become more like Jesus. Amen.
