New city catechism question of the week:
Question #9:
What does God require in the first, second, and third commandments?

Answer:
First, that we know God as the only true God.
Second, that we avoid all idolatry.
Third, that we treat God’s name with fear and reverence.

Memory Verse: 1 TIMOTHY 1:15

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.

Talk about it together

Jesus is God’s son. He is both truly God and truly human. When Jesus came to earth, he was born into a human family, just like we are.

Long before Jesus was born, God made promises to his people. He promised to send someone who would rescue them from sin. God used many people and families to prepare the way. Some of Jesus’ ancestors were Abraham and King David. God kept his promises through their family line.

When Jesus came, he showed that God always keeps his promises. He is the rescuer God promised. We can become part of Jesus’ family when we trust and believe in him. God forgives our sins, welcomes us into his family, and we belong to him forever.

Family discussion

  • Who were Jesus’ parents on earth?

  • Whose family did God promise would be as numerous as the stars?

  • What makes Jesus different from you and me?

Family prayer

Lord, thank you for your perfect plan and your promises. We praise you for your son, Jesus, who rescued us from sin. Amen.
