The Walls Rebuilt

LESSON DATE & SCRIPTURE: Feb. 8 | Nehemiah 1-6

New city catechism question of the week:
Question #6: How can we glorify God?
Answer: By loving him and obeying his commands and laws.

Memory Verse: 1 Peter 5:10 (runs through 2/22)

And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.

Talk about it together

God gave Nehemiah a special task: rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem. It was a big project, and not everyone was happy about it. As the people worked, Nehemiah encouraged them and prayed for God’s protection and strength. God answered his prayers and blessed the people as they rebuilt the wall.

God does not promise his people an easy life, but he does promise to be with us. Just as God was with Nehemiah as he led the people and protected them from their enemies, God is with us today. God sent Jesus to protect us from our greatest enemies, sin and death. Jesus died on the cross and rose again to rescue everyone who trusts in him.

Family discussion

  • What made rebuilding the walls so hard for God’s people?

  • How many days did it take to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem?

  • How can you be an encouragement to someone this week?

Family prayer

Lord, thank you for the promise that you are always with us. Thank you for giving us the strength and encouragement we need each day. Amen.
